Why a Bikeathon?

Bike4Life started as a way to support Jack Timmerman in his fight against Batten disease. After Jack's diagnosis, I realized how many rare diseases silently devastate families โ€” illnesses with no cures, few treatments, and little public awareness.

Families facing these diagnoses need every bit of support they can get. Bike4Life has answered that call: in 2024 we raised over $2,300 for Ronald McDonald House, in 2025 over $3,300 for Make-A-Wish Foundation, and in 2026, Pathways SC donated $5,000 to Jack Timmerman's Medical Trust.

As for why biking โ€” it's a family tradition. Every Thanksgiving my family goes to Hilton Head, where we spend our days on bikes. Even though Jack is past the age of the tandem, biking is still the easiest way for him to ride alongside his cousins despite his loss of vision. He may not be able to see the path, but he can feel it โ€” and that's what matters.

About Jack

The Heart of Bike4Life

In 2023, after months of unanswered questions, Jack's parents received a diagnosis that changed everything: CLN1 Batten disease โ€” an ultra-rare, terminal neurodegenerative disorder.

Jack was just seven years old.

An avid reader who could finish a chapter book in a day suddenly couldn't make out the words on the page. He began tripping over things and relying on touch instead of sight.

Today, Jack is 10 years old and functionally blind.

But if you meet Jack, blindness isn't what you'll notice first. You'll notice his laugh. His quick wit. His love for music, Harry Potter, and making people smile.

In October 2025, hope arrived in Chicago.

Jack became one of only a handful of children in the world to receive an experimental gene replacement therapy at Rush University Medical Center.

That hope is why we ride.
